Gameplay description

In the game Climate Cooldown, "Refrigerant Management" is a Cooldown card that addresses our use of HVAC units in our homes and other buildings which make up a huge footprint of global emission due to burning energy to run them as well as the ozone depleting elements that some can emit.

Prospective degrees

Mechanical engineering, Environmental engineering with a focus on air quality

Careers

HVAC technician specializing in refrigerant recovery, Refrigerant emissions reduction engineer

    Elementary

What is an example of a refrigerant and why is its management important?

Can you think of any ways to reduce the environmental impact of refrigerants in your home?

    Middle

Explain the role of refrigerants in cooling systems and their environmental impacts, such as ozone depletion and global warming.

Discuss the importance of proper refrigerant management practices in reducing emissions and protecting the ozone layer.

    High

Examine the regulations and policies governing refrigerant use and disposal, such as the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment.

Evaluate strategies for phasing out high-global-warming-potential refrigerants and transitioning to low-impact alternatives.

    Advanced

Critically analyze the technological advancements and challenges in developing sustainable refrigeration systems and alternative refrigerants.

Discuss the global efforts to address refrigerant management as part of broader climate change mitigation and ozone protection strategies.
